T he trip home was uneventful as far as the angel hunters went. The farther she

got from town the better she felt. Caitlyn couldn’t wait for tonight.

When they got home Lucas brought the supplies in. She didn’t help because of her bandaged hands. Maura put the items away. Caitlyn followed her like a puppy learning where everything was supposed to go. She was determined to be a good wife so he would fall in love with her. And yet, I was a good wife to Eric and that didn’t make him love me enough to not kill me.

After supper, Lucas, Maura and Caitlyn retired to the living room. Caitlyn and Lucas sat on the green sofa and read, while Maura sat in one of the brocade chairs and knitted.

Caitlyn loved this room. One full wall was bookshelves and so many she’d read before but they were new now. Lucas hadn’t read a lot of them but bought them because he and Diana both liked to read.

She was thrilled to be able to read these old books that she could touch the first editions of, when she worked in the library. She started with Lucas’s favorite, Black Beauty. She’d read the book as a kid but reading it now, while living on a ranch with horses and even one called Beauty, made it special.

After about forty-five minutes, Caitlyn stood. “I think I’ll head to bed. It’s been a long day.”

Maura looked up. “See you in the morning, dear.”

Lucas glanced up. “Are you feeling all right? Have another headache?”

Caitlyn smiled, leaned over and kissed his cheek. “I’m fine. No headaches. I’m just a little tired after our busy day.”

“I understand. Go on and lie down. I’ll come in a bit.”

She headed upstairs and when she could no longer be seen from the living room, Caitlyn began unbuttoning her blouse as she walked. By the time she reached the room, she was sliding the blouse off her shoulders and down her arms, the worn cotton soft against her skin.

The room was dark except for the light from the hall lamps that Lucas lit for her earlier. She hurried to her side of the bed, struck a match, and lit her lamp.

Then she unbuttoned her skirt and stepped out of it. Once she finished undressing, she gathered her clothes into a single pile on the floor, then she took her hair down, and crawled under the sheet to wait for Lucas. The sheet was cool and crisp against her heated skin. She closed her eyes for a moment and reveled in the feel of it.

Her wait was short. He came in about three minutes after she got into bed.

She lay on her side propped up on her elbow. “You didn’t read long. Are you tired, too?”

His grin was her answer.

She lowered her chin and looked at him through her lashes. “Could it be that my husband wants to make love as much as I do?”

“Your husband definitely wants to make love to you.” He stripped out of his clothes, leaving them, much as she did, in a pile on the floor.
